What We Are Up To

FGCU Campus Garden

The FGCU Campus Garden will be a food-production garden that will help students understand the amount of preparation and work that is required to grow their own food. Today’s society detaches students from where their food comes from and the amount of effort it takes to put that food on their plate. The FGCU Campus Garden will get students in the garden; turning soil, planting seeds, harvesting crops and designing beds. The food produced in the garden will be eventually served in dining halls on campus. This will not only allow students to take pride in their accomplishments in the garden, but also put locally-grown, organic foods on campus.

Besides the direct benefits of food-production and community involvement, it has been proven that regular work outdoors and in gardens can help relieve stress and promote a sense of peacefulness in students. This would be a great way to unwind in-between hectic classes and long work hours. Several locations for the garden are being looked at, but a location in Housing is looking the most promising. Things that will be in the Garden will include fruit trees, perennials and annual vegetables, herbs, flowers, and other native vegetation. The FGCU Campus Garden will be completely student funded and student-ran and service learning hours will be available for students that work it the Campus Garden.
