Senate Executive: The Senate Executive Board is chaired by the Senate President Pro Tempore and is comprised of the Senate President, Senate Secretary, and 4 standing Committee Chairs. Bills are submitted to the Senate Executive Committee by a specific deadline and are reviewed to ensure there are no preemptive issues that have arisen, after which the bill is then allowed to committees. Senate Executive is considered the leadership within Senate; oftentimes problems and issues regarding Senate are discussed by the committee before action is taken or decisions are made.
Members of the Senate Executive:
Senate President: The Senate President is considered the ceremonial representative of Senate; he or she attends meetings or events on behalf of Senate and is expected to relay information between Senate and the other branches/ administration. The Senate President is the Chair of Senate, and serves to maintain decorum as dictated by the Rules of Procedure and Roberts Rules of Order. Organizations or Departments seeking sponsors for bills may contact the Senate President, where the bills are then delegated to the Senators.
Senate Pro-Tempore: The Pro Tempore is literally the temporary President. In any case where the Senate President is not able to attend a meeting or perform a specific task the responsibility is then delegated to the Pro Tempore who acts in his or her place. Within the Senate Meetings the Pro Tempore assists the President in assuring Roberts Rules and the Rules of Procedure are being followed and keeps track of time limits as stated within the ROP. The Pro Tempore also acts as Chair of the Senate Executive Committee.
Senate Secretary: The Senate Secretary is responsible for keeping minutes, taking roll call, maintaining voting sheets and recording absences at all Senate and Senate Executive meetings. He or she ensures proper format on all legislation for documentation purposes and also serves as the main contact regarding Senate wide emails and bill submissions sent to Senate and Senate Executive as he or she holds all of the contact information for Senators, Executive members and the administration.
Each standing committee is represented in the Senate Executive Board by a chair from each committee.
Appropriations Committee: The Senate Appropriations Committee annually reviews the Student Government Finance Code which governs the use of A&S Fees and annually appropriates A&S monies to different departments and registered student organizations on campus during the Spring Budget Season. This budget is then proposed to Senate and, when passed, is reviewed by the University President for approval. The Committee also works to review all Senate Allocation Bills and assures that all are within the limitations of the Finance Code.
Outreach Committee: The main purpose of the Outreach Committee is to better connect Senate with the Student body through programming and marketing. By working with different media outlets and creating interactive opportunities between Senators and the student body this committee is constantly implementing new avenues of interaction and connectivity in order to create a more representational legislature. This committee is often utilized to gauge student opinion, organize straw polls, broadcast Senate meeting times, and to promote Senate sponsored events.
Relations Committee: The University Relations Committee's purpose is to enhance the communication between Student Government Senate and the University Administration. To promote effective communication the University Relations Committee hosts an annual meet and greet every fall attended by all Student Government representatives and University Administration, schedules meetings with senators and their respective deans yearly, and provides a speaker series for senators to further educate and inform senate on important topics relative to their success as an effective Representatives of their constituents.
Legislative Committee: The purpose of the Legislative Committee is to review all SG governing documents to ensure they are efficient, functional, and in line with University policies. This committee often authors the necessary changes to Student Government governing documents and proposes them to Senate; bills reviewed in Legislative Committee are expected to fall in line with all governing documents, if they fail to do so the proper recommendations are made by the Legislative Committee to the Senate and other SG branches in order to ensure the proper actions are made on the legislation.
